How to Use Nylon and Stainless Steel Zip Tie Guns

A guide to using nylon and stainless steel zip tie application tools.

A zip tie gun is a device designed to tighten zip ties to your specific requirement and tension. The device also cuts off excess plastic or metal to prevent damage from dangling pieces. These tools work for various applications, from DIY home projects to professional trades such as electrical work and construction.

    Uses

You can use these devices anywhere from DIY in the home, to the office or a trade job such as builder or electrician. Whether it's to sort out computer wires or other projects, the zip tie gun is more than capable for a variety of uses. These tools are particularly popular among electricians, mechanics, and facility maintenance workers.

    Trigger-Operated Zip Tie Tools

Trigger-operated tools are available in two versions: one for nylon ties up to 0.2" wide, and one specifically for stainless steel zip ties.

To use a trigger-operated zip tie tool:

    1. Wrap the tie around your bundle or object.
    2. Pull tight manually first to hold it in place.
    3. Attach the gun at the tie head.
    4. Press the trigger until reaching your preset tension level.

These guns feature a tension adjuster displaying the strength level as a number on the handle, giving you precision control over how tight each tie is fastened. The tool automatically cuts the excess tail cleanly on release.

    Lever-Operated Zip Tie Tools

Lever-operated tools are available for nylon ties up to 0.35" wide. The process is similar — wrap the tie, hand-tighten, attach the tool, and engage the lever mechanism. Some models include a tension knob for adjusting tension settings before use.
