Zip ties are predominantly made from plastic, metal, or a combination of metal coated in plastic. Each design serves specific environments with different structural properties. The right material depends on your intended use conditions.
Standard Nylon Plastic Zip Ties
Standard zip ties use nylon 6/6, suitable for general-purpose applications. The "6/6" designation refers to the nylon's chemical structure and polymer chain composition. This material offers flexibility, high tensile strength, resistance to tension, and weathering resistance. Nylon is a synthetic polymer group called polyamides.
UV and Heat Stabilized Nylon Zip Ties
Standard nylon withstands temperatures up to +185°F. UV and heat stabilized variants use specially formulated heat stabilizers for working environments up to +248°F. These ties provide superior ultraviolet light resistance, making them ideal for continuous outdoor exposure where sunlight and high temperatures are concerns.
Stainless Steel Zip Ties
Metal zip ties are manufactured from stainless steel to provide extra strength and withstand high temperatures and vibration. With a high melting point, 316 stainless steel ties are generally accepted as fire-resistant and flame retardant.
All metal zip ties use marine grade 316 stainless steel, providing the highest tensile strength and superior corrosion protection for extreme temperatures and harsh conditions. A protective chromium oxide layer prevents moisture-related rust formation. While not completely rust-proof, 316 stainless steel is the most corrosion-resistant available.
Nylon vs Stainless Steel Metal Zip Ties
Stainless steel ties should be preferred in conditions involving extreme heat, harsh weather, radiation, and where maximum strength matters. Nylon would not provide the added strength and corrosion protection that stainless steel offers.
