Zip Tie Fixings, Bases and Accessories and How To Use Them

Zip tie fixings, mounts and bases are efficient, affordable accessories used to organise cables inside a building and on external walls. There are so many different zip tie accessories available, choosing the right ones can be a little tricky. Our guide will explain what zip tie mounts and bases there are, where they can be applied and how to use them.

What are zip tie mounts and bases?

Zip tie mounts and bases are attached to a flat surface and used in combination with a zip tie to support bundles of wires. The zip tie threads through the slot and is secured around the cables.

Some mounts are self-adhesive, while others need screws to be attached to the surface. There are also masonry mount screws which remove the need for adhesive or traditional screws.

Self adhesive zip tie bases

Self adhesive zip tie bases are ideal for supporting cables temporarily, without the need for drilling holes or using screws.

These bases are most often used to hold lightweight bundles of cables, for example to hang decorative lighting or seasonal displays. They are so easy to use; you just stick them to the wall or other surface and thread through a zip tie before adding cables.

These zip tie bases are perfect for use in the home, in offices, or anywhere indoors.

Our self adhesive zip tie bases are available in black and white, so you can use them alongside our black or white zip ties to create a uniform appearance.

Zip tie screw mount saddle bases

If you’re looking to permanently support lots of heavier cables using zip ties, screw mounted saddle bases are the best option. This is because they’re attached to the surface with screws in the centre of the base, creating a strong, secure fixing.

They can be used indoors, to support trailing cables along ceilings, walls or under floors. You can also use them outdoors to secure cables for exterior lighting or CCTV systems, for fastening garden hose reels to the wall, or any other pipes.

Zip tie masonry mount screws

Zip tie masonry mount screws are a fantastic and durable solution for fixing cables to walls quickly and without fuss. You don’t need any mounts or screws to secure these.

To use them, simply drill a hole wherever you want to mount cables using a masonry drill bit. Then knock a mount into the wall and slide a zip tie through the square head of the screw.

Eyelet zip tie fitting

Eyelet zip tie fittings are small but tough bases which can be used for securing heavier cable bundles in more restricted spaces - for example, under desks or behind cabinets.

Available in black and white, they are made of UL approved nylon and feature an eyelet at the side of the base. It’s straightforward to fasten on to a wall. Just drill a hole where you want to fix the cables, add a screw in the eyelet and thread through a zip tie.

How to attach a zip tie to a wall

  1. Identify where you want to fix the zip tie and make sure the surface is clear of any objects

  2. If using a self adhesive zip tie base, peel the protective layer off the base and stick it firmly onto the surface. If using a screw mount saddle base or eyelet zip tie fitting, mark where you want to fix the zip tie, drill a hole either 0.16" or 0.2" for the saddle bases then 0.14" for the eyelet ones, then add a wall plug. Secure the fitting using a screw.

  3. If using masonry mount screws, drill a 0.31" hole and gently hammer in the plastic screw.

  4. Finally, thread the zip tie through the fixing.

How do you nail cable to a wall?

You can nail cable to a wall using zip tie mounts or bases as above, or you can use cable clips.

A cable clip secures a single cable to a fixed point using an in-built nail. P clips are a single piece band which require a nail or screw to be added.

This video from Ultimate Handyman shows how to attach cables to exterior walls using cable clips.

How do you join zip ties?

To join zip ties, you can use a double loop zip tie. Simply thread a second zip tie through the spare loop to connect them.

What zip ties shall I use with the mounts and bases?

You can use zip ties up to 0.35" wide with our mounts and bases. Take a look at our range of standard nylon zip ties
